- First Impressions
- Strong & Weak Points
Like we’ve said, we were stoked to hear Firefly came up with a new version of the Firefly 2. After having not heard from the company for years, they’ve resurfaced with a brand-spanking-new version of what was already considered a premium vape.
The Firefly 2+ (Plus) comes in a thinner and slimmer box, a leaner packaging that creates a seemingly smaller environmental footprint. The materials used in the box, outright tells you that what you have in front of you is a premium unit. The box is sturdy and the printing on the front and sides of the box is glossy. The image of the actual Firefly 2+ (Plus) can be seen on the slide out cover of the box. Removing the Sliding cover, you’d see a plain white box with the Firefly logo at the front facing bottom part of the box. Pulling it upwards opens up the box in flap-like fashion. The unit is immediately revealed. It looks very similar to the Firefly 2 except for some minor changes like the additional branding and all the good stuff it hides under the hood. Common to many of today’s modern portable vaporizer packaging, the box of the Firefly 2+ (Plus) has several layers of compartment. The top most layer holds the vaporizer and a few sheets of papers below, you’d find the included essentials to help you get going. We found an instruction manual, a USB charging cable, a charging dock, and some alcohol wipes. I must say that the included items were so neatly packed it kind of felt like we didn’t want to take the stuff out.
- 1 x Firefly 2+ Plus Vaporizer
- 1 x Rechargeable Battery
- 1 x Charging Dock
- 1 x USB Cable
- 1 x Pack Concentrate Pads
- 1 x Instruction Manual
Overall, we can say that the packaging, though it appeared to be smaller and thinner did not at all disappoint.
The Firefly 2+ (Plus) boats features that proves it’s better not only from its predecessors but also from the rest of the vaporizers in its class. Here are a couple more features that makes the Firefly 2+ (Plus) a worthwhile unit.
- Advanced heating algorithm
- Dynamic convection heating
- Magnesium alloy chassis
- Ceramic superalloy heating chamber
- Capacitive touch sensors
- Magnetic connections
- Glass vapor path
- Swappable batteries
- Not a point-and-shoot vape
- Requires preparation
Arguably some of the best sessions we’ve had, Firefly proves yet again that they’re the team to beat in the portable vaporizer platform. Well, I guess we could only expect nothing but the best from the guys that were former Apple employees. With the use of premium components coupled with advanced technology, the folks at Firefly had the recipe for success, selling only for $249.95.
We have to admit that the Firefly 2+ (Plus), like all other Firefly models, comes with a bit of a learning curve. It isn’t like a vape pen or a vape pod that you just pick up and go. Using the Firefly 2+ (Plus) might feel awkward at first. You’d just have to get used to a different way of handling and operating it, and don’t worry, it’s all going to be worth it. Here’s how we did it and hopefully you can learn from our experience to make your transition to the Firefly 2+ (Plus) even easier.
First, make sure that the Firefly 2+ (Plus) is fully charged. A fully charged battery got us for about 3 – 4 sessions. I’m talking about 5 – 6 hits per bowl running at around 370 – 390 degrees Fahrenheit. To charge your Firefly 2+ (Plus), simply connect the USB charging cable to a wall adapter and then to the Firefly 2+ (Plus) charging dock. The LED light on the magnetic lid will begin to light up. It blinks blue when charging and will turn to solid blue when the device is fully charged. A dead battery charges in as fast as 45 minutes which means you’ll enjoy more time vaping than it actually takes to charge the device.
When the Firefly 2+ (Plus) is fully charged, set it aside and prepare your dry herb materials. We recommend using a grinder and grinding it semi-fine. The Firefly 2+ (Plus) can also be used for concentrates and having to come with a concentrate pad right out of the box is pretty sweet. However, for this review, we’ll be using some ground botanicals. Once you have your ground materials, you can remove the magnetic lid of the Firefly 2+ (Plus) by lifting it from either side, this exposes the chamber where you can load your materials. Pack the chamber to just above the rim and make sure to tamp down the herbs to achieve a tight pack for an even and a stable burn. However, we strongly suggest poking a few holes on your plant material after tamping it down. We found that it helps with the airflow and provides a much comfortable draw when you hit on it. Replace the lid and make sure it’s connected securely. Now it’s time to power the Firefly 2+ (Plus) on.
Press two fingers (thumb and index) on both sides of the Firefly 2+ (Plus). You’ll find an indented area where the sensors are located – that’s where you’ll have to place your fingers. The tricky part is that both fingers have to be there at the same time to activate the Firefly 2+ (Plus) heating elements. Trust us, handling it while vaping felt a little weird to but you’ll get used to it soon enough. You can take long and deep draws for dense and visible vapors. However, we enjoyed taking short and subtle pulls which gave us smoother and more flavorful vapors.
You can say that the Firefly 2+ (Plus) isn’t exactly the most portable vaporizer. Its length is roughly over 5 inches long making it nearly impossible to conceal it in the palm of your hands. It’s Almost one-and-a-half inches wide and a little over an inch thick giving it a considerable size. We simply can’t see it as a point-and-shoot vape especially the Firefly 2+ (Plus) could require a little preparation before use.
We suggest pre-grinding your herbs if you plan to use it outside. While it heats up in as fast as 3 seconds, it still doesn’t match smaller units below 3 – 4 inches long when it comes to portability. We just don’t see ourselves packing it in our pockets on a short stroll around town, one might keep it in a glove box and pull it out when you want to take a drag. Nevertheless, it still is a portable unit and its size allows you to keep it in your bag or any kind of pouch that can handle the Firefly 2+ (Plus) well. Unfortunately, this does not come with a carrying case which was a bummer.
Although not the most portable of vaporizers, the Firefly 2+ (Plus) clearly outclasses its competitors in terms of durability. All the components used in this device is made from high-quality raw materials and is housed in a magnesium alloy chassis. The magnets that hold he lid and the main body of the battery together keeps it in place and the lid won’t easily fall off the main body of the Firefly 2+ (Plus) even when kept inside a bag. It holds the lid firmly in place wo you won’t have to worry about losing the top piece.
Also, the batteries prove to be really tough and can charge in as fast as 45 minutes. What’s better is that if you’re on a rush, say you’re charging the Firefly 2+ (Plus) on your vehicle, you may charge the Firefly 2+ (Plus) for only around 20 minutes and it’ll have charged to about 80% already. However, we still suggest following proper charging habits but the battery on this thing really proves it can handle to hell and back grinding sessions.
Need we say more, the Firefly 2+ (Plus) is arguable the most versatile portable vaporizer we’ve used so far. It features precise temperature settings and is arguably the only vaporizer to offer a temperature range of 200 degrees to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. You’ll also have the option to use a free downloadable application that can further improve and enhance your personalization options.
It vapes both waxes and botanicals and already includes the wax pad straight out of the box.
The gem of the Firefly 2+ (Plus) is its dynamic heating technology which only heats your materials the moment you draw from the mouthpiece. As you draw the heating element gradually increases its temperature until it reaches the set level. An advanced microchip also balances and refines the temperature ramping to make all your draws ripe with all the good stuff.
Stellar. The Firefly 2+ (Plus) gives a remarkable performance in terms of vapor production with its dynamic convection heating technology. Yes, the Firefly 2+ (Plus) is a pure convection vaporizer so you’re sure that the flavors you inhale are all clean and smooth, free from combustion or any irritants from burnt and charred plant matter. This dynamic heating system coupled with a borosilicate glass bowl and an all-glass vapor path ensures that the quality of your materials is faithfully preserved.
Price to Performance Rating
The Firefly 2+ (Plus) can easily sweep you off your feet. For only $249.95, we can’t emphasize enough how much value this vaporizer brings to the table. It takes the saying bang for your buck to a whole new level. The Firefly 2+ (Plus) gives you full convection heating, superior vaporization though its borosilicate glass bowl, unparalleled temperature ranges from 200 degrees to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and a durable and sturdy body that protects all the technology used in this device what more can you ask for?
While the Firefly 2+ (Plus) is easily one of the best ones we’ve had, we can say that it’s not made for everyone. More intermediate level users might appreciate the Firefly 2+ (Plus) better than beginners. The seemingly complex means of placing two fingers on the capacitive touch sensors might not be for everyone’s tastes.
Nevertheless, we’d recommend the Firefly 2+ (Plus) to anyone who is willing to learn new vaping techniques to experience top-tier vapor production from a top-shelf vaping unit.
